ULALA (renamed Gorno-Altaysk in 1932) was a village with a population of 5700 in 1926, which became the centre of the Oyrot Autonomous Oblast (Ойротская Автономная область) in 1922 and later, the capital of the Altai Republic. The distance between Ulala and Novo-Nikolaevsk (renamed Novosibirsk in 1926) is about 450 km.
