SOVIET AIRMAIL ROUTE SVERDLOVSK - KAZAN - MOSCOW AIR ROUTE
Kalata (Kirovgrad, Sverdlovsk oblast) 1935 (31 August) - Domestic Registered Express envelope to Moscow with 1r Building and Soviet Definitives 15k & 5k paying the correct 1,20 roubles rate including a 20k special air fee for airmail from Asian Russia (tariff for airmail registered from 26 August 1932: 1 rouble + special air fee of 20k in effect 1st May 1930). Arrival Moscow 3 days later, 14 April (1st day probably being a stop at Kazan). Very Fine.
Very scarce Registration and "EXPRESS" handstamps from Kalata, a mining city located in the Sverdlovsk oblast (10,000 inhabitants in the 1930s).
This airmail route between Sverdlovsk (Yekaterinburg) and Moscow was opened in early 1928 (see Ackerman, page 239), as a part of the Moscow-Irkutsk connection. Interestingly, Sverdlovsk - being located at the Urals - was the border point drawing the line between European and Asiatic tariffs for airmails.
