RSFSR & SOVIET UNION MIXED FRANKING: SEPTEMBER 1923 AIRMAIL
Petrograd 1923 (1st September) - Envelope to Sweden, sent via the airmail route MOSCOW-KÖNIGSBERG, transit Moscow 3 September. Special two lines red handstamp "Mit Luftpost Befördert Königsberg (Pr.) 1.". Rare 30 rubles airmail rate to Europe (tariff valid only 10 days from 25 August until 3 September 1923), paid by a combination of both RSFSR 3r Definitive & SOVIET UNION´s First Agricultural & Industrial Exhibition set. All stamps are used at face value. Extremely Fine.
A superb and rare usage, at the correct rate and period. We have recorded less than 20 covers with mixed franking of both RSFSR and the first issue of the Soviet Union.
The RSFSR Postal department kept its postal sovereignty on the Soviet territory on behalf of the USSR until 30 November 1923. Therefore between 19 August (date of issue of the first Soviet Union set) and 30 November 1923, stamps from both political entities could be used together.
